Kitchen reveal - Part 2: Counters, faucet, sink

Thank you everyone for the kind comments on my cabinet post yesterday! Now onto Part 2 - the counters!

Before I get into all the details...let's just jump to the chase. Here's what you really came for:
(and you even get a sneak peek of what will be the backsplash!)

I never really discussed the counter selection process on the blog, except in this post where I debated light vs. dark. I knew that I wanted light counters, but was worried about the softness and staining of marble, so I did what I always do - researched and asked around for information on marble alternatives. What I found was Superwhite Granite - it's different than other granites because it doesn't have the speckled look that is typically associated with granite, but more of a veined look like marble.  We went to a few warehouses and our decision was made!

The other kitchen decisions happened fairly easily - we knew we wanted more than a single sink (sink posts here and here), and once I saw the Moen Level faucet at the Interior Design Show I knew it was the faucet for me! (Faucet posts here and here).

I am extremely happy with the granite, sink, and faucet. Oh - and did you notice the soap dispenser placement? Option Number 1 won out! Not necessarily according to plan...we were hoping to have it in the top left corner of the sink...but based on how the granite was cut there wasn't room for it...so #1 it was. All of that analysis, just to find out that we really only had one option available. haha And the sink is so roomy, I think the "1/2" sink in our 1.5 is the same size as many double sinks.

We are well underway...we are painting the kitchen now (final coat tonight), and hope to install the backsplash this weekend (wish us luck! Any tiling tips are very very welcome!). So you have a bit more time to wait for the full reveal, but hopefully this sneak peak keeps you happy for a little while :)

  2. Hey Heather! Looks awesome :) as for backsplash tips, I found it really useful to be one step behind Lane as he lay the tile, cleaning the mortar and grout carefully to ensure its even. A second set of eyes is useful for a tile profile you will look straight at (instead of down i.e. flooring).

  4. Love the granite! I went through that same process of loving marble but not the upkeep but not loving the speckles in granite. I never even came across yours though-- beautiful! We ended up going with a grey granite with big chunks instead of speckles. Nice sink, too. Looking forward to the big reveal.

  6. You've got the best of both worlds: the durability and resilience of granite, and the pretty veined look of marble. I only wish I knew there was such a stone called Super White Granite. Great job!

  7. I am IN LOVE with your counters ... they're beautiful! I'm not a huge granite fan and have always assumed I'd go with marble in the kitchen, but having marble in our bathroom has made me reconsider (specifically, a head lice incident a few months ago with my daughter, which had us rinsing her hair with vegetable oil and STAINED our marble. I was so mad and it still makes me sad to see it). This is a beautiful option; excellent choice!! Love the sink and faucet also. All great choices. Can you even stand how pretty it looks? If I were you I'd be spending all my time in the kitchen just staring at it :)

  9. Love the counter top! We were considering local granite to replace ours, but none of the (colour) options suited, but I can still drool over yours :)
Everything looks really sleek & modern together, great decisions!

  14. we're using superwhite in our kitchen too (http://www.five2eight.blogspot.com/2012/02/counters-take-2.html) except that i've been told that it's actually quartzite, not granite. not sure if that helps anyone else looking for it? it looks fantastic though, seeing your counters installed is making me even more excited to get our kitchen finished!!

can't wait to see the backsplash! i think the most difficult part of tiling is deciding where to start/the layout. after that, just start slow until you can figure out how many tiles you can install before the mortar sets. good luck!

I can't believe that's granite-such a nice colour, similar to marble, but without the draw backs. You have inspired me to look into this colour for our kid's bath. I really wanted marble but was afraid of it.

P.S Thanks also for commenting on my blog, you made my day!

  21. Love the sink but holy crap, that counter. It's not marble?????? When I saw photos I thought it was marble. I adore the look of marble and have installed it in my bathrooms in past houses but would never put it in my kitchen. This is going straight to the top of my list of "100 Things Carol Must Have".

  22. You must be so thrilled with the new look of your kitchen. We renovated our kitchen about 4 years ago and it was so worth it. I would just stand there and stare at the kitchen when it first got done. Very exciting - enjoy it!

  23. That's neat choice of sink. Some prefer having one big sink, while others prefer two equally spacious ones. Both work well. It is essential for undermount sinks like this to have extra support for the disposal. Your faucet accentuates the sink beautifully, and the choice of the granite matches the look of your kitchen.
