Rethinking bathroom space

I hinted in my last post that some recent measurements may lead to my dream bathroom not coming true. We were looking at 60" vanities (which seems to be the smallest common size you can get for a double vanity), but we're a tad worried that if we go with 60" it will be too clunky and "there" in the bathroom. We have a radiator at the far end of our bathroom, beside the future vanity. The radiator currently takes up about 8" of precious space. We could look at slim rads (like StelRad) but we assume those would still need 4-6" to be hung on the wall and to allow some breathing room. All this adds up to our 90" long bathroom being just a tad short (for you know, things like the 26" door swing). We aren't changing where the door is so we can't do a pocket door to save on swing space (the only option would be put the pocket door behind the shower...which for obvious plumbing reasons is not an option).

We came to the conclusion that a smaller vanity was the answer and would make the bathroom look better in the end because it wouldn't be stuffed with furniture.I've contacted Lumsden Custom Cabinetry for a quote for a smaller vanity (check out the beautiful vanity they made for Janice at Life Begins at Thirty, Right).

We also did some shopping this weekend.  We came across a few wall-hung vanities that are still double vanities, but only 54" in length. They are also a bit more shallow than the other vanieites we were looking at, and being wall hung give the illusion of space (and provide enough room to propoerly clean underneath). They are very modern...which we're not against, just a different look than we were initially going for. Here are a couple of options:
(PS - check out those prices)

These vanities are 54" but I think they still allow for a lot of counter space while maintaining good sized sinks (19" wide).

What do you think of wall hung vanities? Clean and sleek, or not your style? Do you think a large single mirror is better than 2 separate ones for a vanity of this size?

Boo to the standard size not fitting. Personally these are a tad too sleek for me although I do think the first one is quite nice. Why does custom have to cost custom.....

I really like the first one and I think the modern vanity would still work with a lot of the choices from your moodboard. Personally, I like a mix of modern and traditional styles in a room

I think they are a bit modern for your plan but I do agree that a mix of modern and traditional could work. Like this style but maybe with different wood (i.e. not shiny?) and even with a different counter?

I think that 54" will still give you lots of space! Just stick with small ish sinks!

Ugh, what a bummer! They are pretty sleek, especially compared to the one you wanted. Are there no other options? I bet you could make it work. I think one mirror would be better for a smaller vanity. Good luck!

The wall hung vanities are too modern for me but they work better in a smaller bathroom; and so does a single large mirror v.s. two individual mirrors. It really depends on the overall style you are going for.

We have the single version of your first pic in our basement bathroom and we love it. Just be warned that our sink is acrylic which in my opinion is not ideal - it's just not as robust as a standard sink. But overall we love the style. You can see it in some of these older shots of our basement here: http://lealoulemonade.blogspot.ca/2011/09/basement-reveal.html

Hmmm tough decisions going on in your end! Would you consider using a traditional console or credenza and repurposing it as a vanity? It's a bit of work...but if you're thinking of going custom anyways it might work, many consoles come 60". Sarah Richardson does this sort of thing alot. It would be alot less clunky than a traditional vanity, less 'there' as you put it....you could maybe find something antique and delicious.
ALL that being said, I do really like floating vanities as well, but I wonder if they are timeless?

This is a great choice! My parents have very similar from a local furniture store and they last many many years. The cabinet offers a good amount of space to store your toiletries as well as towels and the whole vanity is easy to clean.
I would definitely go for one large mirror in the center, maybe in oval shape (to break the sharp edges) and white finnish.
Let us know how you decided!
